Prathamesh Treatment Updates
Update 12 : 13th Nov 2010
Prathamesh passed away today evening.
Update 11 : 31st July 2010
It has been more than 3 weeks since Prathamesh is admitted in Sahyadri, bravely fighting the GVH disease. Life is tough for Prathamesh and his family. His mother - Bharti has been in hospital besides him all the time. His dad - Gopal has been relentlessly shuttling between hospital, home, office and different charity institutes for collecting funds. The family is overwhelmed with the shear magnitude of challenges at the two fronts - Prathamesh's treatment and paying bills for the treatment. One single thing which is keeping them going is 'hope'.
I am immensely grateful to Dr. Shashikant Apte Sir for giving the much needed positive support and mental strenght for Prathamesh and family members.
Prathamesh's condition is improving. For next two weeks he will be going through the Naptha treatment (major offensive against GVHD).We are praying God that he wins the battle against GVHD.
Silver lining is that the recent blood count report has confirmed that there are no traces of cancerous cells in Prathamesh's body. This is huge positive news which gives us optimism and hope.
Incidentally, tomorrow is Prathamesh's birthday (1st August). Yes, we will be celebrating his b'day!. His friends are very excited. The preparation is going in full swing.
Update 10 : 15th May 2010
Dear well wishers of Prathamesh,
Prathamesh is going through challenging time. He has developed extensive chronic Graft Verses Host (GVH) disease and is currently admitted in Sahyadri Hospital for treatment.
Dr. Shashank Apte is optimistic that Prathamesh has excellent chances of getting cured.
The funds collected last year for Prathamesh’s stem cell treatment is getting consumed fast. We are now facing shortage of funds for the GVH treatment.
The total expenditure for his treatment will be 5 lacs.
I humbly request you to help by generously contributing towards Prathamesh’s medical treatment.
You can donate directly to Prathamesh's Saving A/C.

Update 9 : 30th August 2009
Today is the 110th day since the BMT. Prathamesh is recovering fast.
BMT Summary Report
Haematology report as on 7th August
Haematology report as on 13th February
Update 8 : 13 July 2009
Today completed 62 days since the BMT. Recovery is as expected. Heamoglobin, Platelets and WBC counts are stabalising. Also the potassium contents in his blood is within the specified limit.
As strongly recommended by doctor, he is doing regular exercise.
Update 7 : 12th June 2009
At last, after a long haul, today Prathamesh was discharged from hospital. He is staying in our sterilized garden-flat in Kothrud. Next three months are critical. He has to be protected like a baby from any infection. His body contains new blood which does not have any vaccine protection. This puts him in a vulnerable state. He will have to wait for 1 year for getting the vaccination shots. Giving it now is futile because the drugs will just destroy them.
Dr has advised him to exercise as much possible. This will help him recover faster.
Update 6 : 2nd June 2009
In today's meeting Dr Shashikant Apte updated us about the progress.
He just showered us with good news.
There are no traces of GVH in Prathamesh's body. The endoscopy results revealed that the connection between food pipe and stomach has weakened due to the chemo treatment. However, nothing to worry about, slowly it will improve and he would be able to eat food properly.
Today is the 22nd day since the BMT (Day 0). At this stage there are no traces of cancerous cells in his body. The WBC and platelet counts are normal and most importantly, around 91% of the blood cells are the new ones generated from the transplanted stem cells. Also, his blood group has now changed from A+ve to O+ve.
Doctor is happy with the BMT results and has assured that Prathamesh will be soon discharged from the hospital.
Tall boy is eagerly waiting for that.
Update 5 : 31th May 2009
For last three weeks Prathamesh was fighting a battle for survival. These were the toughest days in his fight against the disease. Who can bear the continuous vomiting and loose motions daily for 20 days, and he is just a boy.
The tussle between the existing cancerous cells and new cells generated through the transplanted stem cells is still going on. Fortunately, Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) has not been detected so far. However, at present, pitch battle (immunologic attack) is still going on in his throat area. As a result, he is not able to swallow food and if he does manage to stuff in something the body just throws it off. Doctors are planning to perform endoscopy on Monday.
A meeting has been arranged on Tuesday with Dr. Shashikant Apte in which he will be updating us on Prathamesh's condition and next course of action.
Update 4 : 11th May 2009
Today was the critical day in the treatment. The first cycle of stem cell transplant is completed. The whole process took around 7 hours. Both Prathamesh and his sister are in good health.
Update 3 : 10th May 2009
Prathamesh is admitted in special BMT ward and is undergoing extensive chemo treatment.
The BMT is schedule tomorrow. Prachi (Bone marrow donor) will be admitted today evening.
Update 2 : 16th April 2009
Today Prathamesh was discharged from Sahyadri Hospital. Some respite to the family members after 10 long days of shuttling between home and hospital in the scorching summer heat of Pune.
Prathamesh's WBC and platelet count are normal. Dr Shashikant Apte is satisfied with the treatment so far. Now all our eyes are on the BMT process for which Prathamesh will be admitted on 2nd May.
We are happy to inform that we have crossed 10% of our goal via GiveIndia. The total of funds raised is Rs2.22L. We know there’s still a long way to go but with God’s grace and your support, we will help Prathamesh.

Prathamesh's fight against Blood Cancer
Prathamesh Dattawadkar is my 15 year old cousin brother. He was to appear for his S.S.C examination in March 09. But unfortunately he was admitted for general weakness and uneasiness on 14th Feb 2009. His medical checkup revealed that he is suffering from Ph + Acute Lymphatic Leukemia (Blood Cancer).
Attending Doctors have recommended two cycles of Hyper CVAD therapy and Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation.
By grace of God his sister- Prachi Dattawadkar has a complete HLA matched with him.
One cycle of Hyper CVAD is over. Now he is under - going second cycle of HYPER CAVD which completes on 21st April 09 . Then in mid-May he will have Allogenic Stem cell transplantation.
Total expenses of the complete treatment will be around Rs 20 Lakhs.
Master Prathamesh is from a middle-class family. His father is retired employee of a private company under VRS. He does not have fixed source of income. Master Prathamesh has one sister who is still in college. With limited financial resources his family will not be able to meet above expenses without your generous financial support.
Hence we appeal you all to contribute to save young Prathamesh who is the only hope for his families’ future.
